Q. How do I acclimate my livestock?

A. At The Marine Scene we prefer and recommend that all livestock be acclimated using the drip method.

Drip System:

  1. Place bag upright into a container below water level of your tank
  2. Open bag and prop it up in the container
  3. Place one end of airline tubing into your tank and clamp it into place
  4. Start a siphon by sucking on the other end of the airline tubing
  5. Once water starts coming down the tubing, tie a loose knot at the free end of the airline tubing
  6. Make sure water comes out at between 1-3 drops per second
  7. Clamp free end of tubing onto container, ensuring the end is dripping into the bag
  8. After bag has filled up, take out half the water and continue dripping
  9. Wait for the bag to fill up again

If it is a fish or mobile invert (shrimp, lobster, crabs)

  • Feed the fish in your aquarium before adding the new fish or invert, as this can make them less aggressive
  • Catch the fish or invert using a net, then carefully place the fish or invert into your aquarium
  • Discard the bag and the water in it

If it is a coral or less-mobile invert (starfish, snails)

  • Carefully pull the coral or invert out of the bag and place it in your tank
  • Try to minimize the amount of time the coral or invert is out of water
  • Discard the bag and the water in it
