Q. Why do I need a protein skimmer?
A. A protein skimmer is a device that mixes air with
the water from your aquarium and allows the mixture to concentrate into foam where
protein molecules attach and become removed. There are several methods of protein
skimming of which counter-current; venturi and downdraft types are the majority.
Protein skimmers are placed either in or near a sump or are hung on the back of
the aquarium.
The primary benefit of a protein skimmer is its ability
to remove a significant quantity of organic matter before it is broken down biologically.
Another benefit is that it oxygenates the water raising your dissolved oxygen.
A protein skimmer can also act as a mechanical filter to a small degree by removing
some particulate matter.
At the Marine Scene we strongly suggest the use of protein
skimmers on all typical aquariums. A veteran aquarist that fully understands the
careful chemical balance in an aquarium and who has the experience to visually
assess his or her aquarium will often minimize or forego the use of a protein
skimmer. A well developed reef tank with a minimal fish load and considerable
use of soft corals can often go without a skimmer at all. Furthermore, regular
water changes can also minimize or eliminate the need for a skimmer. Ultimately
the choice is based on overall water quality and the aquarist's ability to maintain
his or her tank as desired.
Be cautious in selecting a protein skimmer. There are many
types and models out there. The key is to get the unit that is properly matched
to your aquariums needs.
