Q. What are trace elements?

A. Trace elements are naturally occurring elements found in varying quantities in seawater. They are the elements that fish and corals use to form their skeleton, tissue, and to help maintain coloration and health. Some of the trace elements are rapidly utilized by the corals and need to be replaced on a regular basis.

Any trace element is naturally occurring in the ocean should be present in a captive saltwater tank. Depending on the quantity and type of animals in the tank, different trace elements become more or less important.
We suggest that reef tanks be dosed with Calcium, Magnesium, Strontium and Molybdenum, and Iodine. Tanks with a lot of macro-algae should be dosed with Iron, Bromide, and Iodide. Fish only tanks should be dosed with all elements, but perhaps to a lesser degree. There are numerous test kits for the hobbyist to use which help to identify the particular needs of a given tank.

The Marine Scene carries all the trace elements that saltwater aquariums need as well as the test kits to make sure that they are at their proper levels. If you have any questions about your tanks personal needs please feel free to stop by the store during store hours.
